Being Canadian, football (soccer in the US and Canada) isn't exactly in my blood - my favorite team sports are American football and, of course, hockey. But the World Cup is something I've always enjoyed immensely. The joy of yet again not qualifying for the World Cup final is that I can pretty much pick and choose which teams to support. England is my default team followed by Germany, but I reserve the right to change my allegiance as the tournament goes on based on quality of play.
Opening day in South Africa. The home team managed a nail biting 1-1 tie against favoured Mexico. It actually looked like they'd get the win when they scored the first goal of the tournament, but Mexico earned the tying goal scored late in the game. South Africa hit the post in the dying minutes for another chance at a win.
In the second game, France was always the better team but was unable to finish and could only earn a scoreless tie. Shades of 2006? Supporters of the French team must be extremely nervous that they will once again be unable to advance despite having so many outstanding team members.
This all adds up to a wide open group. The game next Wednesday between Uruguay and South Africa could well be pivotal. Can't wait!
