I've started to fill out my ballot for the Smallville Fandom Creativity Awards - so many choices! Unfortunately I stopped bookmarking my favourites half way through last year so I don't have a "short list" of more recent fics for reference. This means I'm going to have to do a whole lot of rereading, but there are worse fates I suppose.

Here's a by no means complete list of who I'm looking at:And that's just for the fic! I don't know how I'm going to choose between all my favorite artworks from [livejournal.com profile] ctbn60 alone! And vids...

Yikes!!

I'm going through Smallville withdrawal so started rewatching my S1 DVDs for comfort. It was such a different show back then - IMO no better than S10, certainly no worse, just different.

Season 1 was dominated by the later maligned "Freaks of the Week", and the quality of an episode often was dictated by the quality of the antagonist. A FOTW episode had to do a lot of things in a very short time span - establish the new character, their power and their back story, build a connection with some of our main cast members, set up the ultimate confrontation and find a way to resolve everything by the closing credits. And that doesn't even count the time the show needed to spend on the 'B' and 'C' story lines to develop the relationships between the main cast members, almost always my favorite parts of these episodes. For example, Reaper is the worst episode of the season IMO with a truly dreary FOTW, but is somewhat redeemed by the fishing trip confrontation between Clark and Jonathon. In later years, I would have welcomed a few more FOTW stories to show us Clark at his superheroing best.

Title: Never Tear Us Apart
Pairing: Clex (Clark/Lex)
Medium: video
Type: angst, romance
Summary: Lex believes he and Clark are soulmates, bonded on the day they met and destined to fight injustice at each other's side. Clark rejects the idea, afraid of his alien heritage and the implications of having so much power. But when Lex almost dies one time too many, Clark finally embraces their future together.

Notes: created for the [livejournal.com profile] clexmas bingo challenge. Prompt: soulmates. Although a few clips are from later seasons, this has a distinctly old school Clex vibe.

Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] voldything, [livejournal.com profile] ctbn60 and [livejournal.com profile] fruitbat00 for their wonderful support and ideas!

Yikes, I've been AWOL for far too long flisties - my bad. However on the philosophy of better late than never, here are my random thoughts about Finale. Despite some WTF moments and a few missed opportunities, I have to give it an A+ for the moments that had me misty eyed, nostalgic and bouncing with joy.

Title of Mix: Two Worlds Collide
Fandom: Smallville
Pairing: Clark / Lex
Medium: Fanmix / Vidmix
Clark and Lex - two lonely souls, each with their fair share of secrets, forced to hide their true selves from the world. Are they fated to become enemies, or can love triumph over all?

To quote my sister, 'it needed more lemur'. Sure there were some wonderful comedic moments, but they didn't add up too much. Not the worst ever but only a C.

In a season that has fumbled the ball all too frequently despite some amazing moments, Beacon was a standout episode for me. I loved just about everything about it and give it an enthusiastic A+. Lets hope it marks a turning of the tide and that we'll see a more active Clark in the weeks to come.

If you haven't checked out [livejournal.com profile] clexmas; lately, you missed a delightful set of Clexy goodies. My contribution was a vid for [livejournal.com profile] fruitbat00.

Prompt: All the times Clark rescues Lex; Hugs and smiles; Everyone trying to pull them apart; Action adventure CLex; Clark being there for Lex; Watching each other or others watching them"

Summary: Lex knew Clark was the other part of his soul the day they met, but Lionel convinces him that the relationship isn't suitable for a Luthor. Fate keeps throwing the two back together, but their secrets keep tearing them apart. How will it all end?

Note: in my a/u, Lex doesn't go to the Arctic to kill Clark, just to confirm what he's always kind of known about the secret. He saves both their lives from that pesky AU by staying with Clark and being willing to sacrifice himself.

jlvsclrk: (Zenyatta by ctbn60)
Sorry for being so incommunicado lately - just so much to do around the new place! But the roof is done (big job, although my part was largely restricted to writing the checks), I'm almost done with the computer room renos and the garden is ready for winter. We then have to redo the living room ceiling (because of water damage from the formerly leaky roof) and then tackle the bathroom. Getting there, slowly but surely.

I haven't written any Smallville reviews lately, in part from lack of energy but mostly because of how hard I find it to express my feelings. I'm enjoying the season a lot even though I feel they've wasted opportunities in practically every episode so far. And once I wait too long, I fear my review might be overly influenced by the many other great reviews I've seen out there, both good and bad, But I do plan on getting back on track after Friday's episode - it looks like a lot of fun.

Zenyatta past performanceSpeaking of Friday, that's going to be Day 1 of the Breeders Cup, the so-called Ladies Day, even thought the two queens of the sport won't be racing until Saturday against the boys. Don't miss it ! The races look to be absolutely spectacular. My beloved Zenyatta looks to extend her unprecedented undefeated streak to 20 and sew up Horse of the Year honours in the Classic, while Goldikova seeks an equally unprecedented three-peat in the Mile. But both mares are facing very stiff competition and I fear to get my hopes up too high. Zenyatta in particular has a lot of question marks against her, since she's never raced on the east coast, has only run twice on dirt (since California switched to synthetic surfaces just as her career began), has only faced the boys once and has lower speed figures than are usually required to win the Classic. She'd also scared away the competition in California, so a lot of people are very dismissive towards her (If you think the Lois versus Chloe wars are bitter, you should see the Zenyatta versus Rachel wars!) On top of it all, she'll be facing a full field in the Classic and given her come from behind style, will need some racing luck to get a clear run. Is she good enough? Yes, but anything can happen in a horse race. Fingers crossed!

Thank you show! That was perfectly spectacular, reminding me of exactly why I love this show so much. The flashbacks were wonderfully used and the glimpse of the future was inspiring. So much wonderfulness!

Sorry I've been so out of touch. The back end of the move is proving much more time consuming than I anticipated - it's hard finding places for all my stuff! It often means first getting rid of my sister's furniture / computer / utensils / whatever which have gotten a little worn down over the year. And I just can't throw out her stuff if I don't like it the way I did with all kinds of my crap. So many things have sentimental meaning for her! Argh. Well, at least I've finally got the cappuccino maker set up. And we did a great job together repainting and reflooring my bedroom so I shouldn't complain. Next up is the roof, then the bathroom. Will renovations never cease?

Anyways, I wanted to post my thoughts on Lazarus even though I don't have all that much original to say. I'm finding it hard to grade the episode because although a few scenes ranked with my all-time favourites, there was also a whole boatload of WTF going on. So despite all the lovely Clark screentime, I'd have to give it a somewhat average B+.

Day 21 - My Guilty Pleasure Ship
Clex of course, though I'm not at all guilty about it! See day 7 for more details.

Day 22 - Best Quote
I'm drawing a bit of a blank here so I'll go to my old standby from season 1's X-Ray.
Lex: I promise I'm not a criminal mastermind.
Clark: I know. A criminal mastermind would have worn a mask.

That quote matches well with Lex's "I am the villain of the story" from Onyx.

And a couple of alternates:
  • worst parent on the show ever: Lionel of course for his continued abuse of Lex, even after his so-called reform. I must say though that I think Lillian did Lex more severe damage, since he loved her and she betrayed that love by letting him take the blame for Julian's death.
  • favorite El/kryptonian other than Clark: the 'real' Jor-El might have won this category since he seems a nice enough person in Relic and Kandor (though I'm none too crazy of the casual adultery in the former episode). But since he did such a horrific job programming the AI that uses his name, I have to back away. Kara seems like another logical choice but I don't think the show used her very well - there could have been a lot of story potential in her adapting to life on earth and struggling with the loss of Kandor but everything came so very easily to her. Lara just seemed bland - the focus of a love triangle with no real story of her own. So I'm going to go with Zor-El, played with such screen chewing abandon by Christopher Heyerdahl.

The weather lately has made me ill - literally. Hot, cold, hot, cold... My body doesn't know how to handle it anymore. So I've got a chest cold with laryngitis - just when I need to be in the home stretch of my move preparation. Thank goodness I'd done so much work earlier in the summer to get the place in selling shape!

Day 19 - Funniest moment
There are several great Clark moments to choose from here - Tom has such great comedic timing. I immediately think of Hex with Clark's denials of his abilities, Escape with the shower scene, any number of scared-of-girls moments like Exposed in the club. Season 4 in particular is chock full of amusing moments, which probably explains why it has long been underrated. I'm going to declare another Chlo-Lo tie, between the bathroom scene in Gone and the loft scene in Devoted. I probably should have included these caps in my recent wardrobe picspam.

Plus an honourable mention to Dawn as Martha in Spirit, singing along to La La.

Day 20 - OMG! WTF moment
Between Doomsday and Power/Requiem, Season 8 pretty much has this category wrapped up. I'll go with the not!Jimmy situation in Doomsday. I hated Jimmy as a love interest but he did make a great sidekick. To 'line up with the mythos' by changing his name was an insult to all. The whole situation is yet another reason why I'm so utterly resistant to the Chloe and Oliver relationship.
