Greetings and a Happy Halloween to all!

FYI, I haven't been posting much lately because a) not much to say and b) busy working on a kitchen reno. I'll post more on the latter once I'm closer to completion. To use my old project management lingo, there's been a lot of scope creep, so what was originally expected to take about 10 days has stretched out over 4 weeks with at least a week more to go. Most of my time seems to be spent moving stuff back on forth though, since we still need to cook - not to mention our Halloween baking!

Enough complaining. I really just wanted to share some Halloween pictures with y'all. Enjoy!

Snow in late April after we had practically none all winter. It makes no sense!

My birthday is officially over but I wanted to say a quick thanks to all my flisties for another wonderful year. Special thanks to:They were all much appreciated.

I had a pretty quiet day and then we went out to see the Ottawa Senators, who unfortunately lost. Well, we at least had fun heaping abuse on the refs, who were pretty off form alas. And I get another celebration on the weekend since my sister couldn't make it to this one. My main gifts were gift certificates to Richmond Nursery, so I can indulge in my annual May gardening shop. I always wind up buying a lot of plants each year because we get a lot of winter kill hereabouts. But its getting harder and harder to find spaces for all the plants, so I may wind up starting another bed.

Lately, I've been nit picking. No, not at plot inconsistencies this time - the real deal. My sister is a kindergarten teacher and one of her little ones passed on head lice -nice. Join me in a massive, "Ewwwwww!" Or "eeeeek!" Anyways, I've become somewhat of an expert nit picker in the last couple of days - not exactly something I ever wanted to be. The worse part is that I'm itchy all over, all the time. My sister has done a few checks and I've come up clean but I must say I'm freaked out.

I haven't been posting or even commenting much lately because of computer problems - the 'r' key on my laptop was crooked (the horror, the horror) so my ever-so-slightly OCD sister started fiddling with it and broke it off. And when she took the laptop in for repairs, they had to replace the entire keyboard (!) so the laptop is currently still in the shop. Fortunately, at least one person on my flist had warned me to get the full warranty so at least I'm not out of pocket. Using my old PC though is practically torture now.

Did you hear that Zenyatta had her first foal on Friday? Here's a link to a lovely video by HRTV showing mama and son on their first outing. They're both doing splendidly! There are also near daily updates in the diaries section at Zenyatta.com - too cute!

I've been learning the basics of digitalr astrophotography and have been thinking of doing some posts on stargazing - I think I can answer 'what does Orion look like' somewhat better than Siri methinks! Anyone interested? Any burning questions?

jlvsclrk: (Default)
LiveJournal's question: what did you learn today?

My response:

That slipping on ice so that you fall backwards and bonk your head _really_ hurts.

Owww! I don't think I'm going to get much done over the next few days.

I haven't posted recently as I've been so busy with the holidays. No idea where all the time went, though I did get in lots of baking (though not as much as last year - I focused on my favourites instead this time round), shopping (not just my own but I also stepped in for my sister and got a few for my nephew as well), cleaning (ugh) and all round busy work. Not to mention Christmas dinner and the inevitable tons of dishes (no dishwasher here - boo). And last but not least, turkey soup - a nuisance to make but a delight to eat (all 2+ gallons of it!!) It all turned out quite well - especially the tree. I do love our collection of ornaments - which is your favorite?

(More Christmas pics at my facebook album)

On a fandom note, I've really been enjoying the goodies over at [livejournal.com profile] clexmas, and can't wait for the postings to start at [livejournal.com profile] secret_chlark. Yes, I love both ships (and Clois too) thanks to all the talented writers and artists out there. Thank you all! Here's to a fabulous 2012.

Yikes, just over two weeks to Christmas!! I've got the Christmas tree up finally though I'm a bit dissatisfied with it. I didn't notice until after I'd added the garland and ornaments that one of the strands of lights, which I ran along the bottom branches, doesn't have any yellow lights in it. So there is this kind of subtle disconnect in the colouring. I guess I'll just have to ignore it.

I wrote a ficlet (or whatever you call something about 300 words long) for the [livejournal.com profile] smallearth advent calendar. Nothing brilliant to be sure but it was fun to write. There are still some places left on the calendar so why not consider joining in the fun. Crossovers with any justice league member are welcome!

I'm trying to do a review for the last episode of Collateral but its proving very difficult. Let's just say I liked it quite a lot despite a myriad of flaws. Maybe my expectations have been lowered?
jlvsclrk: (Default)
Sorry I haven't been online lately. Christmas was a lot of fun but kind of frantic with the shopping and cooking and cleaning and visiting. My giftees were quite impressed by the container of goodies I'd cooked for them: fudge, caramels, turtles, creamy pralines, glazed almonds, peanut brittle, candied orange peel, almond butter crunch, spicy hermits, peanut butter cookies, coconut mice, chocolate chips and gingerbread men (well actually pigs - nothing says Christmas like a gingerbread pig, no?)

I'll be catching up with my flist over the next few weeks, but just had to drop a line wishing you all a belated Merry Christmas and the happiest of  New Years.
jlvsclrk: (Zenyatta by ctbn60)
Sorry for being so incommunicado lately - just so much to do around the new place! But the roof is done (big job, although my part was largely restricted to writing the checks), I'm almost done with the computer room renos and the garden is ready for winter. We then have to redo the living room ceiling (because of water damage from the formerly leaky roof) and then tackle the bathroom. Getting there, slowly but surely.

I haven't written any Smallville reviews lately, in part from lack of energy but mostly because of how hard I find it to express my feelings. I'm enjoying the season a lot even though I feel they've wasted opportunities in practically every episode so far. And once I wait too long, I fear my review might be overly influenced by the many other great reviews I've seen out there, both good and bad, But I do plan on getting back on track after Friday's episode - it looks like a lot of fun.

Zenyatta past performanceSpeaking of Friday, that's going to be Day 1 of the Breeders Cup, the so-called Ladies Day, even thought the two queens of the sport won't be racing until Saturday against the boys. Don't miss it ! The races look to be absolutely spectacular. My beloved Zenyatta looks to extend her unprecedented undefeated streak to 20 and sew up Horse of the Year honours in the Classic, while Goldikova seeks an equally unprecedented three-peat in the Mile. But both mares are facing very stiff competition and I fear to get my hopes up too high. Zenyatta in particular has a lot of question marks against her, since she's never raced on the east coast, has only run twice on dirt (since California switched to synthetic surfaces just as her career began), has only faced the boys once and has lower speed figures than are usually required to win the Classic. She'd also scared away the competition in California, so a lot of people are very dismissive towards her (If you think the Lois versus Chloe wars are bitter, you should see the Zenyatta versus Rachel wars!) On top of it all, she'll be facing a full field in the Classic and given her come from behind style, will need some racing luck to get a clear run. Is she good enough? Yes, but anything can happen in a horse race. Fingers crossed!

Hi all! Sorry I haven't been in touch much lately. I made the big decision about a month ago to sell my condo in Toronto and move to the countryside to be closer to family and old friends. It's going to be quite a change!

In order to get the house ready for the market, I've spent the last month de-cluttering and cleaning and painting and cleaning and replacing the bedroom carpet and more de-cluttering and installing laminate flooring in the living area and cleaning AGAIN because there was dust from the installation everywhere. Then more painting and finally it was all done. Well, except for rearranging the furniture to make the place look lived in but not TOO personal because apparently buyers get turned off by seeing things like family photos. *rolls eyes*

I wanted to post some pictures but of course in all the de-cluttering, I managed to misplace my camera cable. Grrr.  But if you're interested, here's a link to my MLS listing. I can't believe how much the property value has gone up in the last 10 years!

Anyways, now that all that is done, I hope to be back to business as usual - until I have to move that is!

Sorry I've been out of touch for the last few days - I haven't even had time to write up my World Cup updates unfortunately. (Go Germany!) My sister came to visit and we've been as busy as we can be given the heat wave that's settled in. We went on Sunday to see the Queen at the Queen's Plate and came within a few heartbeats of heatstroke, and as usual I got a bad case of sunburn. I'm still dehydrated I think! Long story short, I'll catch up with everybody over the weekend.

In the meantime, I thought I'd share the ficlet I wrote for the "Where Do We Go From Here" challenge over at [livejournal.com profile] cw_land , picking up after the season 9 finale.

Hi all, I'm back! Well, I actually got back on Friday but I promptly got sick and have spent most of my time sleeping. Still trying to catch up on my flist - I do love all the amazing stories and meta and art you've been creating!

I had a great birthday in Smiths Falls. We actually spread out the celebration over nearly a week so my diet was pretty much smashed to shreds. The highlight was going into Ottawa to see the Senators play what turned out to be an absolute thriller of a game that clinched their playoff berth. We also saw several movies including Clash of the Titans, which wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

Many thanks to my flist for the birthday wishes and pics and V-gifts and the lovely story by [livejournal.com profile] twinsarein. I'd like to thank you all individually but I lost the list I was keeping from Smiths Falls. I'm such an idiot!

I just realized that thanks to all my recent travels, I haven't reviewed any Smallville episodes since Absolute Justice. So for the record, here are some mini reviews.

jlvsclrk: (Why Choose by ctbn60)

Although I primarily ship Clex, I enjoy a lot of Chlark and other Clark pairings too. Basically as long as its well written and compelling characerization, I'll read it. One thing I've noticed though is a distinct dearth of Clois fic on my flist. Is it all hiding on DI, or buried in Fanfiction.net (which I refuse to weed my way through)? Is there some LJ out there where I can find links?

On a totally unrelated note, can anyone point me to some Lex-caliber commentary on Julius Caesar, specifically the play by Shakespeare and then generally on the topic of his assassination. I'm working on a story and want to make Lex's comments sound Lex-like.

And finally, don't forget to check out my pics from the Olympics on my facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=150199&id=619487292&l=36cbecb6b2 Whistler looked absolutely gorgeous for the middle week of my trip. Oh, and if you're on Facebook and want to friend me, I'd be honoured. I mostly post about Zoo World though!

Oh, and before I forget - many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] twinsarein for the lovely v-gift. Your lovely comments really brightened up my day!

*waves tiredly*

I had a fantastic time at the Olympics but I haven't been this exhausted since... hmmm, I don't think I've ever been this tired! I'll write more later and share some pics but for now I think I'll sleep for about a week! And then I'll have to catch up on my missed Smallville episodes and all the fantastic stuff my flisties have no doubt cranked out in the last few weeks. Will I ever catch up?

jlvsclrk: (ClarkUpUpAway by Christina Kat)
Wow - it's now officially less than 4 weeks to the Olympic Ceremonies on February 12, which just happens to be my sister's birthday as well. We're definitely going to be partying, even though I do have an early volunteer shift the next day. Oh well, I'm getting used to staying up all night!

I'm already starting to prepare since its always a challenge in Whistler - you need to dress in plenty of waterproof layers. And I have so many other things that I'm scared I'll forget to do ahead of time so I'm busily making lists.

Speaking of lists, if any of you would like to get a postcard from the Games, please send me your address. I've screened comments for privacy.
