Male pregnancy (mpreg): what IS the attraction? In the Smallville-verse, I think it stems from the inherent absurdity of either Clark Kent or Lex Luthor becoming pregnant, usually as a result of Clark’s alien biology and/or Lex’s meteorite induced mutation. Consider the comic possibilities of Superman no longer fitting into his costume, or mastermind Lex suffering the indignities of morning sickness. Not to mention the question of just how the baby is going to get delivered…
For an author looking for more serious themes, there are many possibilities. Clark Kent is a person obsessed with the need to keep a very important secret: that he is a superpowered alien – a scientific treasure trove for the unscrupulous. His deepest need though is to keep those around him safe, and in doing so, he constantly risks exposing the secret. To protect himself and especially his loved ones, he is forced into lies and misdirection. But becoming pregnant is something that he can’t hide, not unless he runs away and abandons his loved ones, or gets some help from a certain billionaire. The drama can be compounded by other circumstances. Consider a teenage Clark falling headlong into a relationship with Lex in Seasons 1 to 3. In such situations, Jonathan Kent is often cast as the heavy, reviling Lex and perhaps even Clark himself when the truth comes out. Or consider an older Clark and Lex, whose relationship has deteriorated into outright enmity, but who are still physically attracted to each other. What better than a baby to heal the rift?
