Day 2 - Least Favorite Character
This is a very touch choice for me. I could have chosen Ollie for taking up way too much scene time, or Davis for the fact that he creeped me out practically everytime he came on screen, or even Pete, the not-so-good best friend (the latter especially because of the debacle that is Hero, combined with Velocity.) But I think I have to go with the consensus pick, Lana Lang, simply because she's been involved in so many arcs of epic fail (Henry Small, fake baby, super Lana, just to name a few). And although Clana gave us some lovely moments that form such an important part of the series for me, it was also supremely annoying in the way the show just refused to let it die. I'm sorry, the two just didn't match up well - neither of them ever felt comfortable in their own skin around each other. I view it as a tragedy that Lana felt it necessary to don the Power suit in S8 to become Clark's "equal" - that she then became literally toxic to him was merely poetic justice. I actually do want her to return though in S10 to resolve that issue and finally put to rest any idea that Clark may continue to hold a flame for her.

ETA: Oh crap, a comment on another post just reminded me of my REAL least favourite character - the talking caves/Jor-El/Fortress, whatever you want to call it. I really do hate that thing, not so much in individual scenes but for the cumulative effect. That thing is just plain defective and I rejoice every time it gets destroyed, only to despair when it is rebuilt anew. Did Zod silence it for good, or will one of S10's returning characters resurrect it? Tune in next season to find out!

Sorry for not being in touch much lately. The condo sold and I thought I'd have a few days to relax but of course I was wrong - I've never been busier! I'm currently at my new place trying to get it ready to move into (prognosis: not so good!)

Anyways, to get back in training for S10, I've snagged the Smallville 30 day meme from [livejournal.com profile] svgurl and numerous others

Day 01- Favorite Character

Hmmm, I have to think about this one for a while - not! Clark Kent is my favourite character by a country mile. I love Clark because he's the ultimate action star with all these amazing super powers, but he thinks nothing is finer than being a normal human being. He likes us better than we like ourselves, and is more optimistic for our future. It's that optimism that I respond to. And it certainly doesn't hurt that he comes in such a beautiful package, with a smile to light up the room. He's not perfect but when he makes mistakes, he genuinely tries to learn from them. I respect that in people.

I've always liked the Superman / Clark Kent dynamic even from my earliest days of reading the comic, and I adored the first two movies when they came out. But that older characterization hasn't aged all that well for me - Superman was just a bit to all knowing and smug in his perfection. And I guess I'm not that much of a romantic because Clark forsaking his power for Lois in Superman 2 never sat at all well with me, not to mention turning back time in the original movie to save her. Smallville may make Clark's journey a little too rocky at times for my tastes, but at least it never let him get away with that type of behaviour.

Phew! I kind of crashed this weekend, I guess because of all the excitement from the condo sale. Hardly got anything done - I didn't even get caught up on my reading. Yikes! Hopefully I'm over the worst of it now.

If you're not already following the [livejournal.com profile] smallvillebbang , you don't know what you're missing. Many of the Smallville fandom's best active writers are participating, and so far they've delivered one thrill after another. It's been mostly Clex so far plus an interesting Lex/Diana crossover, while [livejournal.com profile] marikology just posted a Chlark story that I'm really looking forward to. And the artwork has been absolutely amazing. My hats off to all.

I've been meaning for a while to do a vid to David Bowie's Fashion featuring brief clips of Smallville fashion - from farmboy chic to working man's blues (suits that is) to dressed-to-impress formals. I'm going to be focussing on Clark but am going to try and pick out some of the other cast members' most memorable moments in two-shots - eg, Clois in Bride and Crossfire, Chlark in Vortex and Bride - plus a sprinklng of more typical but still memorable looks. My list so far )
I'd really appreciate your help identifying other favourite moments. Thanks!

Conditionally, but still... Less than a week on the market!
jlvsclrk: (ClarkPeeking by tomsgg)
Hi all! Sorry I haven't been in touch much lately. I made the big decision about a month ago to sell my condo in Toronto and move to the countryside to be closer to family and old friends. It's going to be quite a change!

In order to get the house ready for the market, I've spent the last month de-cluttering and cleaning and painting and cleaning and replacing the bedroom carpet and more de-cluttering and installing laminate flooring in the living area and cleaning AGAIN because there was dust from the installation everywhere. Then more painting and finally it was all done. Well, except for rearranging the furniture to make the place look lived in but not TOO personal because apparently buyers get turned off by seeing things like family photos. *rolls eyes*

I wanted to post some pictures but of course in all the de-cluttering, I managed to misplace my camera cable. Grrr.  But if you're interested, here's a link to my MLS listing. I can't believe how much the property value has gone up in the last 10 years!

Anyways, now that all that is done, I hope to be back to business as usual - until I have to move that is!

Calling all Smallville and NFL fans! I thought it might be fun for us to have a Fantasy Football League so I set one up. It's completely free and we're playing for bragging rights only. Basically, you start by doing a draft - I've set it up for July 31. (Note that even if you can't make it, nfl.com has a lovely system to pick up the best available player for you based on the expert opinion or your custom list.) Once the regular season begins, you set your line up. You can also make trades or pick up players on waivers - important with bye weeks and injuries. I had a lot of fun last year and hope this year will be even better with y'all.

Join Here: http://fantasy.nfl.com/registration/privateleaguejoin?leagueId=55716
League ID: 55716
League Password: Season10

ETA: it seems you first have to be a member with NFL.com before you can register for a league. Don't worry, it's also free! https://id2.s.nfl.com/fans/register?returnTo=/fantasy

ETA: i've changed the draft date to Aug 29 at 5 PM EDT

Just a quick update to squee over yesterday's consolation final, which just may have been the match of the tournament. It helps of course that Germany won, but it was more than that. With nothing to lose, the two teams both played aggressively, with back-and-forth action that had me enthralled.
details under the cut )

So now its on to the big game. I think Spain is vulnerable because of their inability to score a lot of goals, meaning the other team will always be hanging around. And the Oranje have always looked to be one of the best teams at this tournament, even if they haven't quite clicked yet. I'm thinking this one may well be a 1-1 tie through over-time, and it might well come down to penalty kicks. I'm hoping the Dutch will pull through.

Sorry I've been out of touch for the last few days - I haven't even had time to write up my World Cup updates unfortunately. (Go Germany!) My sister came to visit and we've been as busy as we can be given the heat wave that's settled in. We went on Sunday to see the Queen at the Queen's Plate and came within a few heartbeats of heatstroke, and as usual I got a bad case of sunburn. I'm still dehydrated I think! Long story short, I'll catch up with everybody over the weekend.

In the meantime, I thought I'd share the ficlet I wrote for the "Where Do We Go From Here" challenge over at [livejournal.com profile] cw_land , picking up after the season 9 finale.

Title: Fruition
Pairing/Characters: Lex, mentions of Clark
Spoilers: 9.22 "Salvation"
Summary: Lex watched it all happen

I didn't update for the last day of the round of 16, mainly because I didn't have much to say. The two teams who were expected to go through did, but not in a fashion that earned them much credit in my books.

But now things are really heating up again, and Friday gave us the ultimate 'upset' - world #1 Brazil was beaten in the quarter-finals, joining a string of top ranked teams that have gone home already. details under the cut )

Pretty soon, another giant will fall as Argentina and Germany face off. My head says the former will win, but my heart yearns for Germany to pull through. They've got a lot of young players and I'm hoping they'll be quick enough to expose weaknesses in the Argentinian defense. Can't wait!

First off, thank you to [livejournal.com profile] tyffi, [livejournal.com profile] duskwillow, [livejournal.com profile] tallihensia, [livejournal.com profile] twinsarein and [livejournal.com profile] tasabian for the lovely profile gifts. I now have 5 footballs, matching the number of goals in the England-Germany match. (I wonder if I'll now get a sixth from an England supporter, for reasons that will be very obvious to anyone who even casually is following the Cup.)

Wow, what a great day of play at the World Cup! I'm sorry for all the American fans but I couldn't help but be thrilled that Ghana made it through.

Friday turned out to be a disappointing day at the World Cup, especially considering that the top 3 teams in the world were playing. But that's sometime how it goes if teams don't need to do much in order to advance, making me appreciate the earlier play of Argentina and the Netherlands all the more.

But now the playoff brackets are set and the real nail biting can begin. The US plays Ghana today (@2:30 EST) in what I think will be a very entertaining match. The US must consider itself lucky to have escaped Germany in the draw, and will have visions of making it to the semi-finals. On the other hand, Ghana is the lone African nation left in the tournament and should effectively have home field advantage - never to be underestimated in a football match.

The other match has Uruguay going up against Korea in what is expected to be an easy win for the South American team. Don't expect a lot of goals in this one.

Wow! Things have become really busy at the World Cup, and several giants have already seen the door. Just one more day of group play to come, and then the round of 16 starts up on Saturday. Good times ahead, at least for a mostly neutral watcher.

Just heard his name mentioned as a participant at the NHL Awards show! I'll watch for y'all.

ETA: he was just on (9:24 PM EST) - he looked mighty fine in his tux and did a little comedy about the player names, then awarded a trophy for best sob story (excuse me, 'overcoming adversity').
jlvsclrk: (Default)
No surprises as the 3rd round of group play began in groups A and B. The teams we expected to see win and advance to the round of 16 did so. And a one-time favourite that looked on the verge of self destruction succumbed, to the grief of some and the amusement of others.

The second round of group play ended with quite a bang - the fans of both Portugal and Spain must be in seventh heaven! Can't wait for the 3rd set of games to begin in a few hours. There's a lot still on the line - only two teams (Cameroon and North Korea) have been mathematically eliminated.

The Samba Kings ruled the pitch and served warning to the rest of the contenders. While the African teams have largely been a disappointment, and the European teams have yet to show their best, the South American teams look formidable.

The play at the World Cup has been pretty much all over the place. In the last few days, we've seen teams display valour in defeat or when fighting their way back for a tie. We've also seen teams in disarray, whose dreams of a World Cup are rapidly diminishing. And alas we've seen all too much inconsistent and downright horrific officiating. Although we've seen a few flashes of brilliance from the favourites, the World Cup still looks like a wide open competition.

Yay! After a week of mostly sluggish play, today was the day the World Cup really heated up. It seems that Germany isn't the only team interested in winning this thing!
