Smallville 9-22 Salvation - instant reaction

Just a quick reaction because I'm off on another trip - what is it about Smallville and travel for me? Anyways, loved it, loved it, loved it! Best season finale ever - I was totally blown away.  A+++. >

A laundry list of things I loved:

  • All the characters were shown at their best - or in Zod's case, their villanous worse. Hurray!
  • The previously on was great - this has been a terrific season despite a brief slump in the back half
  • The vision of the future had so many anvils and happy making moments - glasses, Lex, Olsen and a brief glimpse of CG!Superman speeding to the rescue
  • I literally screamed at the TV set with joy when Clark opened the package from mom. The full colour "S' reflected in those eyes = squeee to the nth degree.
  • I adored Clark's conversation with Chloe about whether to use the device or not - I loved his resolve to help earth and find another way
  • LMAO at Clark's line about knowing this wasn't just another test because Jor-El wouldn't pass up the opportunity to lecture him
  • Tess truly redeems herself!!!!!! OMG, I totally loved her face off with Zod (ouch - didn't mean that as a pun) Moral of the story - never let the villain slither away while you're monologuing
  • Enjoyed the bickering amongst the heroes until Clark steps forward with his decision. I loved his whole speech about why he changed his mind, and how they'll need to fill his shoes (not possible, but good speech!)
  • Chloe's understated "I'm proud of you" followed by a rushed exit. I ♥ Ollie for explaining the situation to Clark, and for urging Clark to say his goodbyes to Lois
  • Yep, even liked the Clois loft scene - he told her how much she meant to him but thought it best to push her away. How much Lois figured out in this scene and how much in their next scene is open for debate, but they both played a big part in her big revelation to come
  • Yep, also enjoyed the Chloe-Oliver, and that's from someone who's been highly skeptical of their romance. But how can you not adore the fact that he got her a satellite!!!!! And OMG! What a cliffie for Ollie. "They're not Kandorians!"
  • The Clois-Zod confrontation - wow! I love that she knew for absolute certain when Zod touched her that he wasn't The Blur. The world was really lucky though that Zod didn't call her bluff about the disk by X-raying her. Anyways, great save! Loved Lois asking for forgiveness for "thinking he was you" as she turns away to show she's not going to pry for the secret. But IMO, Clark decides Ollie was right after all and tells the truth in the best possible way - with a farewell kiss of bittersweet passion. And I love the simplicity of the confirmation that she knows with one single word - "Clark!"
  • The whole final scene with Clark versus Zod and the Kryptonians was a grand slam for me. Clark knew that Zod's relationship with his troops wouldn't withstand the slightest hint of the truth, so he kept pushing him to make a mistake. And in the grand tradition of monologuing villains, Zod fell into his trap. Two sentences were all that were needed for the entire charade to crumble. And then Clark's efforts throughout the year paid off as the Kandorians accepted the alternative offered by the Book of Rao. Yay!
  • But Zod clearly had always feared exactly this, and he came prepared with a blue K dagger! One last reminder that this is an enemy to be feared. Great fight scene between the two!
  • Clark's final decision moved me to tears. In a kill or be killed situation, where killing also meant permanent exile from Earth, he decided to take a leap of faith in hope of finding the third option. Will he save himself in the season premiere or will one of his allies swoop to the rescue? Or something else entirely? I can't wait to find out in Season 10!

I'm sure there are more good (and perhaps a few bad) things that I've forgotten about, but I'd better finish my packing. Hope you enjoyed the show half as much as I did.
